Hydraulic cylinders
Controlled power in all conditions | AmberLine Hydraulics
AmberLine hydraulic cylinders are robust solutions designed for demanding agricultural, transport and industrial hydraulic systems. Our portfolio includes double-acting cylinders in various stroke lengths, providing precise motion control in both directions; single-acting cylinders (ram cylinders) that are ideal for simple working circuits; and telescopic cylinders, also known as tipping cylinders or trailer cylinders, which are perfect for applications requiring a long stroke with compact overall dimensions. We also offer a range of accessories to support and enhance cylinder operation.
Advantages of hydraulic cylinders
The simple operating principles of hydraulic cylinders and their uncomplicated construction are undoubtedly among their greatest advantages. The ability to generate very high forces, long working strokes and compact overall dimensions are clear strengths of this solution. This is why hydraulic cylinders are so widely used in modern working machinery.

Types of hydraulic cylinders

Single-acting hydraulic cylinder
A single-acting piston cylinder (also known as a ram cylinder) has only one port connection. As a result, the rod extends when pressurised oil is supplied, while the return movement is generated by the load. This is the simplest and most basic type of hydraulic piston cylinder. This solution is most commonly used as a hydraulic lifting cylinder wherever high lifting capacity is required but there is no need for bi-directional operation. These reliable hydraulic cylinders are widely used in applications such as agricultural machinery (e.g. hydraulic press cylinders) and construction equipment.

Double-acting hydraulic cylinder
The advantage of double-acting hydraulic cylinders is their ability to operate in both directions. This is a more advanced solution that requires supplying pressure to two oil ports. Such hydraulic cylinders act as working elements in every industry that uses hydraulic power to drive machinery and are the most widespread type of hydraulic cylinder. The rod stroke is not as impressive as in telescopic cylinders, but in most cases it is more than sufficient.

Telescopic cylinder – “trailer cylinder”
In this case, the key parameter that determines the cylinder design is the rod stroke length. The special design allows very long working strokes (up to several metres). These hydraulic cylinders are used as tipping cylinders on agricultural trailers, construction tippers and in other applications where the required length of the working element exceeds the technical capabilities of other types of hydraulic cylinders. This type of cylinder additionally requires a special mounting arrangement (a so-called cylinder cradle), which is also available in our product range.

Hydraulic rotary actuator
This is a specialised type of actuator that provides limited-angle rotary motion (not a full 360 degrees). Such hydraulic rotary actuators are characterised by high torque and a compact design, which allows them to be used as a tilting mounting element, for example for the basket of an aerial work platform.
Accessories for hydraulic cylinders
This is a wide range of products that support the operation of hydraulic cylinders. It includes valves (flow control valves, hydraulic lock valves, hose burst valves), cylinder mounting components such as rod-end clevises and cradles for telescopic cylinders, as well as other smaller items, for example rod wiper boots and hydraulic cylinder seals (external and internal seals) that need to be replaced when the hydraulic cylinder is being overhauled.

Parameters of hydraulic cylinders
The primary parameter that characterises a hydraulic cylinder is the working pressure (rated pressure) – the hydraulic pressure which, via the working fluid, acts on the piston of the cylinder and causes it to extend. The force that the cylinder is able to generate, and thus its lifting capacity, depends on the working pressure and the piston diameter (cylinder bore diameter), and in the case of a double-acting cylinder also on the rod diameter. Another key parameter describing hydraulic cylinders is the stroke (rod stroke) – the distance by which the working element of the cylinder extends. Overall dimensions are also important, such as the outside diameter, the cylinder length in the fully retracted and fully extended positions, as well as the operating speed (the time required for the rod to extend).
The performance and parameters of hydraulic cylinders are strongly influenced by operating temperature, oil cleanliness class and the hydraulic fluids used, which is why it is important to maintain the hydraulic system properly and pay attention to these factors. The selection of hydraulic cylinders for a specific application must take all of the above parameters into account.
Elements of a hydraulic cylinder
A basic hydraulic piston cylinder consists of a body (tube) with welded hydraulic ports and a rod-end clevis or other type of mounting, a piston mounted on the rod, and the piston rod itself (with a rod-end clevis). The cylinder also includes external seals (piston seals) and internal seals (rod seals). Cylinder mounting components are further elements that form part of the hydraulic cylinder assembly. These most often include rod-end clevises in various diameters and, in the case of telescopic cylinders, special mountings such as cradles.
Additional components include hydraulic fittings and other parts of the hydraulic system, such as hydraulic hoses, flow control valves and hydraulic lock valves (for self-locking cylinders), as well as rubber rod boots and external ELA-type transducers.
